The 24th November saw the usual
runaround as the 2007 Course 6 group put the finishing touches to
their piece-de-resistance, the good-idea bad-idea saga. Staff
members Lance and Darren were instrumental in helping get ideas
together. Craig came to their musical rescue as the final rehearsal
moments approached and there were technical difficulties. Everyone
was stressing.
Time came for the Junior
courses to arrive and within minutes the sedate
Herschel
Theatre was alive with
excited and elegantly attired students and their proud families and
friends. Graduation day as always was one of thrills and surprises,
entertainment and laughs, and a satisfying feeling of success. A
flash through the events of the year was met with laughter, gasps
and applause as Craig’s now traditional amazing montage played out
on the screen. Another highlight of proceedings was undoubtedly
Matthew’s staff video which had Mike and his bike bursting forth
on-stage alias an Indian magician. Director David Gore opened
proceedings with a warm, welcoming address.
Graduation certificates, beautifully inscribed and each with
its unique seal, together with sparkling trophies, prizes and
awards, were presented to the excited students by Bruce Hutchison,
Chairman of the College of Magic Board.
The top award, Junior Magician of the Year, was shared by Matthew
Ross and Yanga Sidliki. Yanga also took the prize for Most
Entertaining JMD Act and had the crowd in stitches as he ended his
performance with his hilarious ‘koo beans’ finale. With Chad and
Saul hovering in the wings to ensure a smooth rendition, the
audience were then treated to the course 6 Act, which was hailed by
the parents and special guests as ‘the best course 6 Act ever’ an
accolade shared incidentally by most Course 6 Acts over the years –
wonderful to share in the passion’ of the moment!
Lights, camera, action,
replay… Time for the Senior Graduation arrived in a rush as the
stage was hurriedly reset, with an abundance of glitzy awards, the
Acts were prepared and the students et entourage settled down for
their ‘Oscar affair’. The year was one of so many events, and
occasions of note – Vegas, The Movie, 13 Magical Milestones, etc…
Awards flowed as magical sequences appeared on the screen to share
special moments with eagerly awaiting spectators. The David Berglas
Award went to Steve Sandomierski for his tremendous support of the college of Magic
over many years and for the fantastic work which he has put into
cataloguing the Antiquarian Library. As Steve is presently
performing on the seven seas his award was proudly received on his
behalf by his daughter, Megan. Some top awards presented were for
senior Juggling Award – Daniel Foord, Best
Close up Act - Neil MacKay, Best Children’s Entertainer –
Matthieu Snaith, who also won the Roy Danby Star Student Award, Most
Entertaining Act – Linesri Thaver and the coveted Senior Student of
the Year – Tim Gore, who also won the Magical Ability Shield.
What a wonderful group the
Course 6 class were – it was sad to have to bid this award-laden
team farewell… but not before an evening of celebration together
with them and their families. After an amazingly quick pack-down at
Herschel
Theatre – some more magic
in action - the staff joined the lively team at Nino’s in Cavendish
to share a happy repast. The late hour eventually brought the
reminiscing and reveling to a close – leaving us looking forward to
a new level of involvement by our new ‘Graduates’ in 2008 and
beyond!
